“Tell me about the wall,” Riley said. He poured more whiskey into the glass.

“The wall?” Veronica Fontaine asked.

“You said you hit a wall in your investigation.”

Veronica nodded. “My sources have dried up. The boy, Nicholas and his uncle, Zachary, who live in this Gothic mansion on the edge of town were an integral part of the puzzle. Nicholas claims to have seen the spaceship and the aliens. He overheard their plans. He showed me proof: a scorched tree he says was cut in half by an alien weapon. But neither of them wants publicity. It’s all off the record and they warned me they would deny it if asked in the future.”

“What else have you got?” the raspy-voiced reporter asked.

The military must know something. They have a base right here in town. But whether they know – or merely suspect – something, they’re not talking. Gen. Cartwright blew me off and now he won’t return my calls. I can’t even get back on the base; they have my name on a ‘no entry’ list at the guardhouse.”

“The army always knows more than it tells the public. Cartwright was transferred to the base a year or so ago. Word is, among my sources, he was placed there to investigate what were considered credible reports of UFO sightings. That doesn’t mean they’ve found anything but it does mean that somewhere along the way something happened to make the military take these reports more seriously than most. But if there’s any credence to them at all, that’s all the more reason for Cartwright to remain tight-lipped.”

“Then there’s the mysterious Neptune Corporation: a relatively new entry that comes on the scene with apparently unlimited resources. When I spoke to Bellamy, he was eager to tell me all about the reclamation plants; he was boasting, actually. Now, he’s missing in action. Bellamy went from CEO to persona non grata at Neptune. If he still works there, he’s unreachable. And the guy you told me replaced him – Kevian – is impossible to talk to. In fact, they’ve beefed up security and no one gets near the executive level without a guest pass or being accompanied by someone who works there.”

Riley puffed on his shrinking cigar. He flicked the ash into the ashtray. “There’s your answer. You need to get inside the Neptune Corporation and learn if it’s a nefarious front for alien invaders or just another run-of-the-mill greedy corporation. You need to befriend someone who works there.”

“I’ve tried,” Veronica said. “All that’s done is made them suspicious of me. I staked out the building and composed profiles of the employees entering and leaving. I learned as much about each of them online as I could, and then approached the ones I thought I might have a chance with. No go, though. Although…”

“A pregnant pause.” Riley squished the stub of his cigar into the ashtray. He reached into his top right desk drawer, his hand passing over a loaded Glock and dipping into an open cigar box.
